Senior Online Games
The Internet is an entertaining place. Aside from communicating with friends and family as well as acting as one giant encyclopedia, the Internet also provides a plethora of fun, in particular, senior online games.
The problem is that so many of them simply are not for us. I am not interested in watching a fast food advertisement for 18 seconds before I can see the game. Disappointment abounds when I see that it is too juvenile.
PacMan is a game that has been uprooted by technology. Looking back, it is hard to believe we thought it was exciting.
There are tons of games available for seniors, ranging from those that sharpen your cognitive skills to those that are simply an easy and enjoyable way to pass the time. But with hundreds and thousands of senior online games available right at your fingertips, sometimes it can be a little overwhelming to find the best ones.
I am not interested in the game of capture the flag nor in shooting a gun at my opponents. Poki is not in my mindset. Running down a ramp while hammers attempt to stomp me is not my idea of fun.
Fun Games for All of Us
I love senior online games, especially Minesweeper or Sokoban. Both can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store on your computer or the app store on your phone.
I must warn you that both are addictive but entertaining. Just what we need for a lazy afternoon.
Minesweeper is shown on a board of squares. Click on any square. Then continue to click the squares. You win if you have avoided all of the mines.
The numbers in the boxes tell you how many mines are on a square touching that square. If you figure out where the mines are, you win. It appears to be impossible but keep at it and you will figure out how to win.
Sokoban is a classic puzzle game. Sokoban online has variations we have never seen before. It is worth checking out.
How to play: Push the boxes around till you have a clear path to victory. The first levels make the game seem easy, but each level gets harder and harder. Think you have figured it out?
The final boxes are the hardest to fit. You may have to start over to finish the level. Use your reasoning powers to complete all the levels in the game. It is great fun.
We’ve checked out a few sites in order to compile a list of the best (and free!) senior online games.
1. AARP
AARP features a collection of senior online games such as chess, puzzle games, brain games, word games, and card games. They also have multiplayer games, or rather, games where you can play against other people that are currently playing online.
However, you need to be a member to utilize all of their fun stuff.
Our top picks: 10 x 10: How to play: Fill the board with different shapes of blocks. It looks like a piece of cake but…beware, run out of space and you lose.
Bubble Dragons: How to play: Aim your mouse and go for it. Match 3 in a row and you are closer to hatching the egg. Improve your hand-eye coordination. You know you can do it. Just line up the colors and you win.
2. Chess
If you’re passionate about chess or even if you’re just starting to learn the game, Chess.com offers a variety of options for you to play online chess or join a tournament — no download necessary.
You may download the game on your mobile device from Microsoft or the App store or just play it anytime using any browser.
3. Puzzles
I’m a Puzzle offers a beautiful collection of jigsaw puzzles you may put together. Choose from a range of 10-piece puzzles to puzzles consisting of 500 pieces. Different styles and cuts are available including classic, elegant, mosaic, square, and spiral cuts.
Their jigsaw gallery contains a variety of categories such as animals, great sightings, street views, bridges, flowers, people, castles, and more.
Shape Inlay: How to play: Drag differently shaped tiles from the bottom of the screen and drop them in the puzzle area to fill up the shapes. Press the spacebar to rotate the piece.
The larger the tiles that are used, the more points will be garnered. To discard a tile, drag and drop it into the hole on the left side of the screen. Don’t let the tiles pile up at the bottom of the screen or the game will be over.
Check out our post, adult brain puzzles. It has more great ideas for senior puzzles.
4. Word Games
Wordle: A great game taking word game enthusiasts by storm is Wordle. It will help you up your “brain power”. As we age, we often “lose” words. In this great mind game, you get 6 chances to figure out a 5-letter word.
The game will alert you not only if any of the letters in your chosen words are included in the final wordle, but also if they are in the right letter location.
With the clues given, you can come up with the final winning word. Read more about wordle on Guide for Seniors.
If you want to play but not get overwhelmed with playing the game constantly, try the game on the NY Times. You get one shot a day to guess the word.
If you want to get your family or friend circle involved, everyone can take a screenshot of the final answer and email it to the group. Just a bit of competition.

Treasure Hunt: A fun game with a pirate theme, this game also helps sharpen your memory. How to play: A number of items found in a pirate ship’s room will be displayed. Try to remember as best as you can. As you continue, click on the items which you think have changed in the room.
Earn gold coins for each changed object that you have identified. Guess the required number of items to be discovered and you will qualify for the next round. As the game progresses, more items are added, and the greater number of items you need to find to get to the next level.
Sudoku: This is an all-time favorite. How can anyone resist any game of sudoku? You can play easy games to more difficult ones. Every row and every column and every 9 grid square contain only the numbers from 1 to 9. But only one of each number. How hard can it be to put the numbers 1 to 9 in a box? Harder than you think.
Unscrambled Words: Not really a game but a great tool to find accurate words in word games. Sometimes you just need a bit of help to continue the game. We all need help every once in a while.
Senior online games are fun and even more thrilling when they are free.
However, you can always read a book or just plant a garden. Who can resist seeing a small seed grow into a plant, especially if you are the one who planted it? Find other ideas for senior entertainment at the Guide For Seniors. Your imagination is endless!
